June 2018 Newsletter

Newsletter template

President:

President Donald welcomed us to Keysborough Golf Club for the Keith Allen Trophy competition and asked all present to thank the club for the use of their excellent facilities, and their generous donation of our main raffle prize. On a cold and crisp winter's morning we set out with hopes of some sunshine to follow. Happily we were not disappointed. A beautiful morning on an excellent golf course! As always the lunch and clubhouse facilities were thoroughly enjoyed by the members.

Donald thanked Robin Miller for his donation of Calloway golf gloves which were gratefully added to our exciting set of raffle prizes.&smsp; Many thanks Robin!

While mentioning the raffle, it should be noted that our raffle is now a key source of Club funds. This is the result of some amazing work being done by both Daryl Edwards and John Hiscock. The members are indebted to both Daryl and John. Well done guys !

These funds are used directly to keep our matchday costs competitive (green fees, lunch) so please continue to support our raffle.

Number of Players / Guests:

We had another terrific turnout today. It was great to see so many members and guests out on the course. Originally we had a magnificent total of 67 competitors for today's event, however both Garry Finnis and Peter Charlewood were late withdrawals through injury. President Donald expressed his thanks to Gary Finnis who still turned out and did a fantastic job along with our other starters. Barry Taylor is still testing out his latest "sat-nav" product and we do hope that one day Barry will arrive on time! We had a total of 64 players which included 3 guests. Keith Aldrich was a guest of Gary Finnis, Mark Pearsonwas a guest of Alex Johnson and Pierre Haikal was a guest of John Chin. We are delighted to welcome John Chin, a recently joined member, to our ever growing band of Vic Vets. All 3 guests were invited to join the Vets and were assured of a very warm welcome. We are delighted to report that Keith Aldrich and Mark Pearson have also decided to join the Vets. All 3 guests received the usual complimentary golf ball.

Please note that when members bring a guest along, please ask them for their Golflink number. Otherwise provide our Handicapper, Ray Desmond, with a guideline as to their playing standard.

Apologies:

There were 12 apologies this month.

Al Abraham, Don Barrett, Rex Buckeridge, Tom Govern, Harold Hayes, Ian Hoskins, John Killmister, Gary Morland, Stan Odachowski, Barry Pollock, Ian Richards, Roger Selwood.

We look forward to seeing the 'boys' back on course soon, together with a few other members who are currently a bit poorly. We wish all of you a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing you at Southern GC on Monday 2nd July 2018 at 8 am for the Alf Jones Trophy stableford competition.

Starters today:

Donald and the members thanked Peter Ross, Gary Finnis and Gary Walters for a job well done in getting such a large number of; groups off and running. As previously mentioned, we cannot proceed without volunteers to run these events every month, so please consider helping as it is a bit of fun and you will get to know more members of the club. Now that there is a requirement for 3 starters, the need for volunteers becomes even more pressing. Please help your Club.

Membership News:

It is pleasing to note that our membership numbers in 2018 continue to grow, which is a wonderful achievement. My thanks to everyone for their efforts to bring along potential new members. We still have room for more new members so please keep promoting our Club as you are all doing a wonderful job.

Next month we have 2 events running. Our usual monthly stableford competition is on Monday 2nd July, 2018 at Southern Golf Club while on Monday 16th July, 2018 we will have our annual visit to Eagle Ridge GC on the Mornington Peninsula. That competition is an Ambrose Four event and the winning team will awarded the 'Winter Classic' trophy. The cost for Eagle Ridge is $48 per player, which includes 18 holes on an excellent golf course, a shared cart and lunch. Please arrange to pay the $48 at our next event at Southern GC to our Treasurer, David Vine. Alternately, you can pay by EFT before then.

The drive to implement the members decision to add their photo to the members database continues apace. Great to see John Molloy adding his personal drive to the matter by helping out with the 'selfies'. Who would ever have thought that a bunch of senior golfers would be running around indulging themselves in 'selfies' !

Let's get these faces on to the member's contact database!

President Donald reiterated the ongoing importance of supporting our sponsor (House of Golf Moorabbin), wearing our club colours at our events, and continually seeking out new members.

CoM Business:

As agreed during our recent members survey on the use of our website, here is the first report of the business matters being addressed by your Committee. It will appear on every second month in the newsletter, following our bi-monthly Committee meetings.

Date: Monday 21st May,2018.

Present: Donald MacDonald, Harold Hayes, David Vine, Ray Desmond, Daryl Edwards, Laurie Comerford, Jeff Taylor.

Apologies: Roger Selwood, Jeff Stevens.

Payment of our Victorian Veterans Golf Association (VVGA) affiliation annual fees: $324 Approved.

Members Survey of our Website: LC provided a summary of his findings from the survey which were discussed in detail. Actions were agreed for each proposal and LC undertook to update the members on each specific point via the May newsletter.

'Top Tier' event: HH is looking at options for an additional event in 2018 to be held at one of the better quality courses in the Melbourne area. HH will advise members on progress and costs.

Life Membership Criteria: JT (working with HH and DE) will review the suitability of our existing criteria, draw on experiences from other golf clubs and report back to CoM.

Joining Fees: Proposal to increase the joining fee from $30 to $65 as of June 2018. The $65 fee includes the $35 required to purchase a Club shirt which will ensure the presence of Club colours at our events, so in effect is not really a price increase.  Motion approved.

Processing of new members: Progress was noted on the improvements as to how we handle both guests and online applicants via our website, who wish to become members. JT/DV/LC to continue their work.

Succession Planning: Discussions were initiated on the requisite skillsets that suitable candidates would require for key roles on the Committee. (Secretary, Treasurer, Handicapper) Ongoing.

Special Achievements:

Very slim pickings on the 'winners' list this month. Clearly there were very few reported incidents of golfing wives being seen transporting the latest piece of silverware to the 'garage' !

If you do win, please let me know as we sometimes miss the notices. You can contact Donald by: email dmacd8@hotmail.com phone 0414 446 636 or text.

Vets Web Site :

President Donald announced that the work on the recent members survey regarding the use of our website was almost complete, with some additional features being added to our website services. These were reported in the May newsletter by our Webmaster, Laurie Comerford.

He also stated that Laurie had done a terrific job in carrying out the survey, working with the Committee members to deliver the improvements which benefit the members.

The members clearly expressed their appreciation of the time and effort that Laurie has put into the survey. Well done Laurie!

Question time:

There were no questions.

He then handed over to our Vice Captain, Jeff Stevens. (Harold Hayes is sunning himself in Far North Queensland)

Pure magic

A magician was working on a cruise ship.

Since the audience was different each week, the magician did the same tricks over and over again.

Picture

There was only one problem: The captain's parrot saw the shows each week and began to understand how the Magician did every trick.

Once he understood, he started shouting in the middle of the show, "Look, it's not the same hat!" or, "Look, he's hiding the flowers under the table!" Or "Hey, why are all the cards the ace of spades?"

The magician was furious but couldn't do anything. It was, after all, the Captain's parrot.

Then one stormy night on the Pacific, the ship unfortunately sank, drowning almost all who were on board.

Picture

The magician luckily found himself on a piece of wood floating in the middle of the sea, and as fate would have it ... With the parrot. They stared at each other with hatred, but did not utter a word.

This went on for a day... And then 2 days. And then 3 days. Finally on the 4th day, the parrot could not hold back any longer and said...

"OK, I give up. Where's the blinking ship?"
