President Report

President:

President Roger in his first outing welcomed 69 starters to the Waterford Valley course where we were playing for the Thord Lorich Trophy. Roger thanked the WVGC for their hospitality and their support to our Vets club. He noted that the course was in fantastic condition, which was shown by the results and the large attendance by members.

Starters:

Our tee starters of Peter Garbellini, Chris Tierney, Noel Manning with Chris Proctor did a great effort on getting the field away, seeing we only had the two tees.

Apologies:

Our apologies totalled 21 for the day, with ex-President Donald sending his regards to the field, stating he hopes to be joining us soon on the course.

Guests

The guests for the day were, John Tetteroo with John Molloy, Ross Rowley with Tom Buzza and Derek MacCallum was introduced by Alan McAuliffe hoping that they enjoyed the experience and look forward to having them as members.

Sponsors

As a reminder don't forget our sponsors:

  • The House of Golf - drop in and see Innes or his staff for any of your golfing requirements.
  • Window Cleaning Services - see Chris Thorne to assist with this household chore.

Goldfields Tournament.

There is a Gold Fields tournament at the Neangar course, part of the VVGA program in April. At this stage Trevor Bottomley has shown interest.

Bush Fire effort

Our Bush Fire effort from the raffle at the previous golf day at Rossdale resulted in totalling $1025, which was fantastic and thanks for your support to assist the golf clubs in the East Gippsland area, namely Mallacoota and Buchan. It was put to the members of the day that we split the donations to those clubs to assist in the rectification of their course - all in favour.

Annual Subs

The annual subs of $30 for 2020 are now payable to David Vine asap.

CoM Business:

Matters under consideration by the Committee this month included:

  1. Insuring that all our members have Golflinks handicaps.
  2. The review of our Club Management rules including Constitution and Bylaws is continuing by a sub-committee. It is hoped to present the new proposals to members for consideration following the next Committee meeting.
  3. Continued recruitment of members to assist in Club Management and development of skills in the Club for this purpose.
  4. Management of processes for Online Applications for membership.
  5. Marketing Manager Daryl has enabled us to improve the prizes for the winners of the A, B an C grades each month.
  6. Planning to create a rational basis for management of Club income and expenditure.
  7. Following our email inquiry and a show of hands at the meeting, we have had sufficient feedback from members to warrant planning a trip to Buchan later in the year.

Proof reading

Now that the newsletter is being proof read by Rod Goode, Rod raised a query on the unusual spelling of Chris Macgeorge's name.

Chris has let us know as follows:

Spelling our surname is correct - Macgeorge. We cannot afford an extra capital letter....????

Drinking and Golf

A man was walking down the street when he was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless man who asked him for a couple of dollars for dinner. The man took out his wallet, extracted ten dollars and asked, "If I give you this money, will you buy some beer with it instead of dinner?"

""No, I had to stop drinking years ago" the homeless man replied.

""Will you spend this on green fees at a golf course instead of food?" the man asked.

"Are you NUTS?" replied the homeless man. "I haven't played golf in 20 years."

"Well," said the man, "I'm not going to give you money. Instead, I'm going to take you home for a hot shower and a terrific dinner cooked by my wife."

The homeless man was astounded."Won't your wife be furious with you for doing that?"

The man replied,

"That's okay. It's important for her to see what a man looks like after he has given up drinking and golf."

Bonus fact - early computer issues

Yesterday afternoon anti-virus company Sophos Inc. released a normal anti-virus definition update that managed to detect parts of their own software as malicious code and disabled / deleted sections of their Endpoint security suite, including its ability to auto-update and thus repair itself. For many hours on the 19th, Sophos technical call centers were so busy customers were unable to even get through to wait on hold for assistance. Today thousands of enterprise customers remain crippled and unable to update their security software. Sophos points out that not everyone will be affected: "Please note this issue only affects Windows computers."
