October 2014 Newsletter

On Monday 6th October 2014 we played at Centenary Park Golf Club. Our game on the day was a Stableford event for the Bob Leverington Perpetual Trophy.

President:

President Bernie welcomed all members to Centenary Park GC and how good it was to see everyone. He thanked the Centenary Park GC for the use of their course, their facilities and wonderful chicken lunch. He asked all members to put their hands together to show their appreciation to the Club.

Number of Players:

There were 43 starters on the day.

Apologies:

Apologies were received from Neil Hills, Jeff Taylor, John Hiscock, Malcolm Turner, Roger Huxstep, Peter Bryan, Peter Charlewood, Roger Selwood, Malcolm Carter, Lindsay Quennell, Harold Hayes and Roger Parker.

Sick List:

Bernie said that it was good to see some of those members who have been frequenting hospitals in recent months back with us - Ray Reid, Alan Baker, Stan Odachowski and Daryl Edwards - welcome back.

We also had two of our Committee members unable to play today, but they have come along to brighten up our day - Donald MacDonald and Gary Finnis - thanks for coming.

Also on the general sick list are Ken Griffiths and Hugh Churchward.

Bernie hoped that anyone who is feeling a bit crook, recovers quickly now that the warmer weather is with us.

Bernie gave a special mention to a very select group of people who may just be getting over a very ill feeling that came on them suddenly last week, when a bunch of Red and White footballers let them down badly at the MCG - myself, Mike Bainbridge and Ray Reed.

Guest:

We had one guest today:        Alwyn Abraham, guest of Tom Govern.

Alwyn became a member on the day.

A warm welcome to you from all members of our Club.

Starters today:

Bernie thanked our starters on the day, Colin Wiseman and Gerry O'Connor. He thanked them for volunteering as we appreciated their help.

Raffle Prize:

He reminded members that we now have an agreement with the House of Golf at Brighton whereby they are subsidising all our winners' vouchers, so please support the House of Golf at Brighton and tell them you are from the Vic Vets group.

Special Achievements:

There were three known special achievements in the past month.

65thAnniversary:

Members were reminded that this was our 65th anniversary year and that our Club shirts, jumpers and hats were available for purchase.

See Daryl Edwards if you wish to purchase our range of products.

Web site:

Since you are reading this, you have accessed the Club's web site at:

www.vetsgolfvic.org.au

Note that for the time being you must enter the above address in your browser as Google continues to show a distinct lack of interest in our site.
We are working on means of upgrading Google's interest. Many members have authorised their contact details to be placed on the web site and these are now available on the members page.

Laurie Comerford will happily address member access problems. See him if you have any concerns.

Special Event:

On 20 October at 8am the Brighton GC versus our Veterans GC annual event will be held, including the classic roast beef lunch all for $40. Members need to pay today to secure a berth, so please see the Treasurer.

Christmas Luncheon 2014

Our Christmas luncheon and annual Trophy presentation will be held at the Rossdale GC on Monday 8 December, commencing at 12.15pm.

The cost on the day will be $40 per head. The meal will be a 50/50 option of Rack of Lamb on mashed potato and seasonal vegetables alternating Prosciutto wrapped Chicken Breast served with Chat potatoes and vegetables. Christmas pudding with Brandy sauce and cream or Berry Pavlova. Drinks are at over the bar prices. Dress is neat casual and a Christmas theme will prevail. A good time is guaranteed.

You can advise me by return email if you and your wife, partner or friend would like to attend or else you can complete the sheet that will be available at our next game - Southern GC.

Rossdale GC has asked that we nominate numbers attending up front even though we will ask for your payment on the day.

The Committee has decided that any member who withdraws their acceptance to attend after 1 December will be asked to pay in full. Rossdale GC has advised us that it will charge us for the final number that we advise them of on 2 December.

I'm here

The boss wondered why one of his most valued employees was absent but had not phoned in sick one day. Needing to have an urgent problem with one of the main computers resolved, he dialled the employee's home phone number and was greeted with a child's whisper. "Hello ?"

"Is your daddy home?" he asked.

"Yes." whispered the small voice.

"May I talk with him?"

The child whispered, "No."

Surprised and wanting to talk with an adult, the boss asked, "Is your Mummy there?" "Yes."

"May I talk with her?" Again the small voice whispered, "No."

Hoping there was somebody with whom he could leave a message, the boss asked, "Is anybody else there?"

"Yes," whispered the child, "a policeman."

Wondering what a cop would be doing at his employee's home, the boss asked, "May I speak with the policeman?"

"No, he's busy," whispered the child.

"Busy doing what?"

"Talking to Daddy and Mummy and the Fireman." came the whispered answer.

Growing more worried as he heard a loud noise in the background through the earpiece on the phone, the boss asked, "What's that noise?"

"A helicopter." answered the whispering voice.

"What is going on there?" demanded the boss, now truly apprehensive.

Again, whispering, the child answered, "The search team just landed a helicopter."

Alarmed, concerned and a little frustrated the boss asked, "What are they searching for?"

Still whispering, the young voice replied with a muffled giggle.."Me."
