Veterans Golf Club of Victoria

August 2017 Newsletter

Aug 2017 Newsletter VVGC

President:

President Donald welcomed us to Patterson River Golf Club for the inaugural competition for the 'Ray Underwood Trophy' stableford competition and asked all present to thank the club for the use of their excellent facilities, and their generous donation of our main raffle prize. Although we had to endure the customary poor weather we seem to get at Patterson River, by all accounts the golf course was in very good condition for a wet, windy and cold winter's morning. Still being unable to play through injury, Donald was delighted to join another couple of 'recovering golfers', Ray Desmond and David Vine for a morning coffee. One of our members, Roger Selwood, who was still recovering from the indignity of his beloved 'Cats' being rolled by the Sydney Swans this weekend, decided to 'visit' 12 separate bunkers on his way around Patterson River GC !! Better days ahead Roger !!  Congratulations to everyone who completed their round, it was a magnificent achievement in the circumstances.

Number of Players / Guests:

Donald said that today we had a total of 48 players which included 1 guest :- David Camino was a guest of Neil Wilson and we extend a warm welcome to David. Hopefully David will be able join our club. He received the usual complimentary golf ball.

Please note that when members bring a guest along, please ask them for their Golflink number. Otherwise provide our Handicapper, Ray Desmond, with a guideline as to their playing standard.

Apologies:

We had 24 apologies noted today.  In addition, a few of the stalwarts that did go out and play, had to retire early. We hope all our members  will fully recover without any lasting effects.
Hans Bleeker, Lance Bolam, Trevor Bottomley, Tom Buzza, Hugh Churchward, Laurie Comerford, Ray Desmond, Chris Donald, John Farrow, George Giles, Bill Heron, Neal Hills, John Hiscock, Phil Horsburgh, John Killmister, Roland Neef, Chris Proctor, George Robinson, Jeff Stevens, Trevor Spence, Jeff Taylor, Malcolm Turner, Noel Valle, Brett Youl.

We look forward to seeing the 'boys' back on course soon, together with a few other members who are currently a bit poorly. We wish you a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing all of you at Churchill/Waverley GC on Monday 4th September at 7.15am, which is a return to our normal starting times.

Starters today:

Donald and the members thanked John Molloy, Alex Johnson and Taffy Davies for a job well done, especially in such miserable weather. Captain Harold is pleased with the progress of the '3 starter' model and he is confident that we will reap the benefits as we go forward. As previously mentioned, we cannot proceed without volunteers to run these events every month, so please consider helping as it is a bit of fun and you will get to know more members of the club. Now that there is a requirement for 3 starters, the need for volunteers becomes even more pressing. Please help your Club.

Membership News:

It has been a quiet month for membership news as no doubt a few of our members are away from Melbourne at the moment, probably looking for some warmer weather! As for the rest of us, 'hang in there' Spring is coming !

He then reminded the members of our upcoming 2 events in September. A booking sheet for each of the 2 events was circulated at Patterson River. If you still wish to play, you can book online for each event or contact Harold Hayes.

We have our usual monthly competition on Monday 4th Sept. at Churchill/Waverley GC at which we will resume our normal 7.15am tee-off times.

In addition, we have the annual Brighton Challenge match whereby the mighty Vets take on the 'seniors' at Brighton GC. You will probably recognise a few of these Brighton stars who also just happen to be current members of the VicVets !

This will be on Monday 25th September at the slightly earlier time of 7am. This is to accommodate the logistical challenges at Brighton these days as they undergo course improvements.

The cost per player is $40 (except for those members who are also Brighton 'Platinum' members who will pay $20 each). This fee gives you 18 holes of golf,  and a most enjoyable buffet lunch, including 2 separate roast dishes. If you wish to play, please contact our Captain, Harold Hayes. Please bring your $40 along to the event at Churchill/Waverley on the 4th. If that isn't possible, please contact Harold to work something out.

As has been the case recently, our membership numbers continue to grow, which is a fantastic result!& My thanks to everyone for their efforts to bring along potential new members. We are a successful and happy social golf club, but we do have room for some more new members. Please keep promoting our Club as you are all doing a wonderful job. The membership sits at a total of 86 however I believe that a target of 100 would provide us with the opportunity to regularly turn out 55-65 members at each competition. This would provide for healthy competition whilst retaining the very special 'social'  feel that there is to our Club.

'House of Golf' Sponsorship:

He reminded us of our sponsorship from the House of Golf (Moorabbin), who are subsidising our monthly winners' vouchers and he urged us to support them. Please go and see Innes at his new super store near DFO, Moorabbin Airport in Cheltenham.

We have been asked by the House of Golf if there is any interest by the members in using their 'X Golf' facility at Mentone. It is a simulator-based facility that allows you to 'play' your way around some famous golf courses. A separate email on this offer will be sent out to all online members by the President.  The offer is open to all members (not just online members) at $50 for a 2hr session. Any immediate enquiries should be directed to our Marketing Manager, Daryl Edwards.

Special Achievements:

A quieter month in terms of achievements with a few successes being noted.
Here they are, in no particular order:

Hearty congratulations were extended to all our worthy winners!

If you do win, please let me know as we sometimes miss the notices.

Club Merchandise:

As always, he urged the members to join in with the 'spirit of the club' by making use of the Club Merchandise. It helps to generate a sense of 'belonging', adding to the social strengths of our Club. Our Marketing Manager, Daryl Edwards, will be happy to oblige with any queries.

Vets Web Site:

Please continue to make use of our website. It is the central point of our Club's administration systems. Our Webmaster, Laurie Comerford, is happy to answer any questions you may have. We will continue to communicate with all our members, be they online with a computer or not.

Question time :

There were no questions.

He then handed over to our Captain, Harold Hayes.

Generosity:

One afternoon a lawyer was riding in his stretch limousine when he saw some people along the road-side eating grass.

Disturbed, he ordered his driver to stop and got out to investigate.
He asked one man, "Why are you eating grass?"

"We don't have any money for food," the poor man replied. "We have to eat grass."

"Well, then, you can come with me to my house and I'll feed you, " the lawyer said.

"But sir, I have a wife and two children with me.  They are over there, under that tree."

"Bring them along," the lawyer replied.

Turning to the other poor man he stated, "You may come with us, also."

The second man, in a pitiful voice, then said, "But sir, I also have a wife and SIX children with me!"

"Bring them all as well," the lawyer answered.

They all entered the car, which was no easy task, even for a car as large as the limousine was.

Once under way, one of the poor fellows turned to the lawyer and said, "Sir, you are too kind. Thank you for taking all of us with you."

The lawyer replied,

"Glad to do it. You'll really love my place.  The grass is almost a foot high."!!!"
