July 2015 Newsletter

On Monday 6 July 2015, we had 49 starters at Southern Golf Club. Our game on the day was Stableford and we played for the Keith Allen Trophy.

President:

President Bernie  said that it was a hard course, a hard day, hard weather treatment and a hard course rating at 72, two above the scratch rating. He then welcomed all members to Southern GC, especially those who have not played here before. It is always good to get to the clubhouse after playing here, as the facilities are so good. He thanked the Club for the use of their course, facilities and lunch

He stated that often we play for a Trophy which bears a name that is unfamiliar to us - today we are so very lucky that this situation does not occur. We are playing for the Grant Haselgrove Perpetual Trophy. Grant was a great member of our club and was the handicapper for a considerable period. He helped to shape our club into what it is today and we were expecting him here this morning, but it is a bit too cold for him. We wish him all the best.

Number of Players:

Today we had 52 starters with 51 finishing - an excellent roll up!

Apologies:

Apologies were received from Laurie Comerford and Ross Hargreaves.

Sick List:

Bernie advised that Mike Bainbridge, Colin Wiseman and Hans Bleeker are on the sick list. However it was great to see that Mike had made it along for lunch. We wish them well and hope for a speedy recovery.

Guests:

We had one guest this month, David Hilton for a return visit, who is a guest of Al Abraham. Bernie said that he hoped that David will join us as he cannot keep coming along as a guest. He welcomed David once more and thanked Al for bringing him along.

Starters today:

Bernie thanked Peter Ross and Alex Johnson for being our starters for the day. They were very well organised.

Eagle Ridge Game

He stated that we are playing for the Club's Winter Classic at Eagle Ridge on Monday 20th July at 8am - that is two weeks from today (players need to be there by 7.30 at the latest to get organised for a quick two tee start). The game is a real fun one as we play Ambrose Pairs - the cost is still $40, which includes a cart and our normal lunch - great value. Today is the closing day for players, so please pay your money to our Treasurer, David Vine, if you wish to play.

VETS V Brighton Golf Club

He mentioned that we are going along to Brighton Golf Club to again defend our title - the date has been brought forward to 21 September instead of October, so players need to take note of this when they get their Newsletter. There will be more on this later.

Raffle Prize:

He reminded us of our agreement with the House of Golf Brighton, who are subsidising all of our winners' vouchers and urged us to support them.

The committee is also happy to receive other donations for raffle prizes, so please help if you can.

Special Achievements

Bernie stated that he knew of three this month, all from Brighton Golf Club (BGC) and he added that if you hear of a win by a club member from anywhere, please let me know before these presentations each month. So, the first was at BGC, off a handicap of 28 with a Par score of 4, our secretary, Jeff Taylor. The next was for one of our starters today, who won the Captain's Trophy with the best net score over two rounds, Alex Johnson. Finally also at BGC on June 20, with a Stableford score of 39 off a handicap of 15, John Sutherland. Are there any more - there appeared to be none, other than John Hiscock who advised that he has become a grandfather - a great effort.

65th Anniversary

He reminded us that the 65th Anniversary polo shirts and club gear are available from Daryl Edwards.

Vets Web Site

The web site is well and truly up and running and Bernie hoped all are using it. Our Webmaster, Laurie Comerford, is putting the Newsletter for this month together, remotely from Northern NSW, (editor's note: 'warm and sunny Coffs Harbour') where he is on holidays. A great effort and it shows that we have achieved much this year. Remember - www.vetsgolfvic.org.au.

Question Time

He asked if there were any other issues that members would like to raise?

There were none, so Bernie handed over to the Captain.

Painfull?

Two women were playing golf.  One teed off and watched in horror as her ball headed directly toward a foursome of men playing the next hole.  The ball hit one of the men.  He immediately clasped his hands together at his groin, fell to the ground and rolled around in agony.  The woman rushed down to the man, and immediately apologised.

"Please allow me to help!  I"m a physical therapist and I know I could relieve your pain if you'll let me," she told him.

"Oh, no, I'll be all right! I"ll be fine in a few minutes!" the man replied.

He was in obvious agony, lying in the foetal position, still clasping his hands into his groin.  At her persistence, however, he finally allowed her to help. She gently took his hands away and laid them to the side, loosened his pants and put her hands inside.  She administered tender and artful massage for several long moments and asked, "How does that feel"?

"It feels great," he said. "But I still think my thumb's broken."
