On Monday 13 April 2014, we had 46 starters at Waterford Valley Golf Club. Our game on the day was Stableford and we played for the Alf Jones Trophy.
Vice President Gary welcomed all members to Waterford Valley GC - a new and testing course. He welcomed back all travellers and those who had been sick in recent times.
He thanked the Club for the use of their course, facilities and lunch.
He said there were 46 starters including 4 guests on the day.
Apologies were received from 18 members; Bernie Coyle, Jeff taylor, Robin Miller, Roger Selwood, Alex Johnson, Noel Manning, Al Abraham, Peter Bryan, Ross Hargreaves, Lindsay Quennell, Alan Millard, Gary Moreland, Barry Pollock, Peter Charlwood and our representative team who are playing at the VVGA comp in Bendigo. Those players are; Ray Underwood, Neal Hills, Kel Tyler and Harold Hayes. (We wish them well.)
Ken Griffiths and Wayne Lamb are on our sick list and we wish them speedy recovery and we hope to see them back on the course soon.
We had 2 guests on the day:-
Gary thanked Peter Ross and George Weaver for being our starters for the day.
The members gave a big thank you to the Waterford Valley GC for their generous raffle donation of a round of golf for 4 at Waterford Valley GC.
The winner of the raffle was Hans Bleeker. Congratulations Hans!
We had one special achievement for the month. John Hiscock won the B grade stroke event at Long Island on 7th March with a net 73.
Also, a very rare achievement to Laurie Comerford, who was the first to play Rossdale's "Gold Course" and as such he held/holds the 'very unofficial' course record of 83 on the par 70 course. The course is 3862m long and a pleasure to play, but requires more consideration of where to hit drives than the standard course.
Monday was the last day to pay up - I hope you are all financial. If you are yet to pay your subscriptions please contact David Vine.
Gary reminded everyone that the 65th Anniversary shirts as well as Club jumpers and caps are now available to members. See our Marketing Manager, Daryl Edwards.
No questions were asked and Gary handed over to the Captain.
Captain Donald welcomed everyone and trusted they had all enjoyed today's course. As this was the first time the Vets had played at Waterford Valley Donald asked for a show of hands if members wanted to see a return to this course in next year's calendar. The consensus was an almost unanimous YES.

A young man with a few hours to spare one afternoon figures that if he hurries and plays very fast, he can get in nine holes before he has to head home. As he is about to tee off, an old gentleman shuffles onto the tee and asks if he can join him. Although worried this will slow him up, the younger man says, "Of course."
To his surprise, the old man plays quickly. He doesn't hit the ball very far, but it goes straight. Furthermore, the old man moves along without wasting any time.
When they reach the ninth fairway, the young man is facing a tough shot. A large pine tree sits in front of his ball, directly between it and the green.
After several minutes pondering how to hit the shot, the old man says, "You know, when I was your age, I'd hit the ball right over that tree."
With the challenge before him, the young man swings hard, hits the ball, watches it fly into the branches, rattle around, and land with a thud close to where it had started.
"Of course," says the old man, "when I was your age, that tree was only three feet tall."
